In February of 2006, four World Fish Carving Champions were in San Diego for the California Open Wood Carving Competition. While there, Bob Berry, Clark Schreibeis, Jeff Compton and Lance Lyons all hopped in Lance`s boat for a business trip (fish reference gathering or otherwise known as fishing) in the waters near the Coronado Islands off the coast of San Diego.
The fishing was slow, but a few "bottom fish" were landed and Clark managed to score a keeper Lingcod. Also on the business agenda was brainstorming about a way to help enhance fish conservation projects and to promote fish carving as a whole. After much discussion, and over the span of a few days, they hammered out a plan that they all agreed upon. In an effort to "give something back" to the fish that they enjoy fishing for and carving as well, and to create a camaraderie among the world`s finest fish carvers, they decided to invite all World Champion fish carvers to join them by financially supporting selected conservation efforts that enhance and/or protect wild fish populations.
They are calling this worthy endeavor the "Champion`s Trout Collection" and it will be achieved by each participating World Champion carving a highly detailed, miniature 4 inch trout carving mounted on an attractive carved base with each fish carving representing one of North America`s most common trout species. The goal is to build a valuable and highly collectable group of miniature fish carvings that will be available for exhibit and/or sale to various institutions, organizations or individuals. All proceeds from the eventual sale of the collection will be, in turn, donated to wild trout.
These champion carvers are all real exited and take great satisfaction in knowing that they have contributed by using their gifts and talents to help wild trout in a direct, hands-on way. |
